Defense spending largely goes to projects that run counter to the public interest. Much of the spending goes to “white elephant” projects- such as the supposedly “indestructible” Merkava (which was easily destroyed by Hamas drones), projects that become obsolete and have little to no civilian use. Even worse, spending on mass surveillance, and riot weapons make it easier for the state to crush political dissent- and provides advanced tech to other countries. At best, it is a waste of money relative to other forms of state investment- at worst it is a moral hazard.
