Labor unions are when workers work together to use their labor power. It is part of the free market that you choice your employer, etc. Perhaps it makes businesses struggle more to get good workers and increases competition for workers. Which could hurt them, but it can also increase revenues for workers causing them to consume more and ensure their rights are protected. Regardless it is their right to do so, and even if it comes with a slight reduction in business profits, it is ok because it improves the quality of life for most workers.

Help, but ban their ability to make political donations and to investigate corruption in them

They play an important role, but their current structures have become anachronistic, and they have become a guild for public service workers and sometimes abuse their ability to impact vital public services. A major reform is needed, to ensure they play a positive, not negative role.
