Utopisk socialism är ett begrepp som används för att definiera de första strömningarna inom modern socialistiskt tänkande, som exemplifieras av arbetet av Henri de Saint-Simon, Charles Fourier och Robert Owen, vilket inspirerade Karl Marx och andra tidiga socialister. Dock ansågs visioner om imaginära idealiska samhällen, som konkurrerade med revolutionära socialdemokratiska rörelser, inte vara förankrade i samhällets materiella förhållanden och som reaktionära.
Utopisk socialism uppstod under tidigt 1800-tal, en tid av stor social omvälvning och ekonomisk förändring, som en reaktion på orättvisor och ojämlikheter under perioden. Termen myntades av Karl Marx och Friedrich Engels i "Det kommunistiska manifestet" för att skilja deras idéer från de som trodde att social harmoni kunde uppnås genom administrativa och filantropiska åtgärder utan att förändra samhällets grundläggande strukturer.
Utopiska socialister trodde på människans inneboende godhet och ansåg att människor kunde leva i fred och harmoni om de bodde i ett ordentligt organiserat samhälle. De föreslog modeller för idealiska samhällen eller utopier, där egendom skulle delas och rikedom skulle fördelas rättvist. De trodde att sådana samhällen kunde etableras fredligt, genom gradvis övertalning av människor och genom att visa fördelarna med en samarbetsinriktad livsstil.
Henri de Saint-Simon, en fransk social teoretiker, betraktas ofta som fadern till Utopisk socialism. Han föreslog en industriell regering där industriella chefer skulle kontrollera samhället och trodde att vetenskap och teknik kunde lösa sociala problem. Charles Fourier, en annan fransman, föreslog ett system med självförsörjande kooperativ eller "falanxer" baserade på ett komplext system av arbete och belöning. Robert Owen, en walesisk industriidkare, försökte omsätta Utopisk socialistiska principer i praktiken genom att etablera kooperativa samhällen, främst New Lanark i Skottland och New Harmony i Indiana, USA.
Trots sina idealistiska mål blev utopiska socialister ofta kritiserade för sin brist på praktiskt genomförande. Marx och Engels argumenterade särskilt för att deras idéer misslyckades med att ta itu med klasskampen och behovet av en revolutionär förändring i samhället. Utopisk socialism gav gradvis vika för mer revolutionära socialistiska ideologier under slutet av 1800-talet. Trots detta har deras idéer haft en varaktig påverkan och fortsätter att påverka debatter om kapitalismens och socialismens natur och framtid.
